The invention relates to a method for directed solidification of a molten mass (1) of a metal in a casting mould (2). The molten mass (1) is prepared in a casting mould (2) at a first high temperature and directely solidified by dipping the casting mould (2) in a bath (3) consisting of a liquid cooling medium at a lower second temperature. To regulate the second temperature, heat exchange is conducted between the cooling medium and an inorganic heat transfer medium (19). Independently thereof or complementary thereto, boroxide or an inorganic salt containing an alkali hydroxide, an alkali nitrite or an alkali nitrate is used as cooling medium. The invention further relates to a device for directed solidification of a molten mass (1).
