An abrasive composition for the base of a magnetic recording medium which at least comprises an abrasive, a polishing assistant and water, characterized in that the polishing assistant is a salt of an aliphatic ester of sulfuric acid, a salt of oxyalkylene alkyl ether sulfate, or an amphoteric surfactant and that the pH is 1 to 13.
