The system for rapid dialling of telephone numbers uses a printed carrier for the number, such as a business or visiting card (3). Along the edge of the card there is a printed bar code which is passed in front of optical sensors which detect the black and white regions of the bar code. The bar code carries the telephone number to be dialled, and this is then dialled automatically by the telephone. The optical sensors which read the code may be fitted to the handset (2). This also includes an electronic circuit for generating electrical pulses from the optical signals detected, and these are converted into the dialling signals required for the telephone system. Each element of the bar code may comprise four regions which can be either black or white, thus giving sufficient different combinations for the ten digits required when dialling.
