PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a floating type magnetic head which can restrict the generation of friction and abrasion to a magnetic recording medium when floating capacity is reduced. SOLUTION: The magnetic head is constituted so that a rail area ratio obtaining by dividing an area (2×X1×Y1 ) of rails at the side where the air enters (a first, a second rails 12a, 12b at the entrance side) by an area (2×X2×Y2 ) of rails at the side where the air flows outs (a first, a second rails 12c, 12d at the exit side) is not smaller than 1.0. When a lowest float position is maintained in the vicinity of a recording reproduction gap 6, and if the float amount is reduced to carry out high-density recording, etc., other parts than the recording reproduction gap 6 are prevented from coming closer to a magnetic recording medium than the gap 6, whereby the collision, friction, and abrasion of the other parts than the gap 6 to the magnetic recording medium is restricted, and a recording face of the magnetic recording medium is never broken.
