A protective circuit in a power amplifier (1) is adapted, by limiting the maximum output current of the power amplifier (1) and by quickly recharging compensating capacitors (C1, C2, C3) in the power amplifier (1), to limit the amount and duration of the power drain in the power amplifier (1) upon over-excitation of the power amplifier (1).
