The invention provides compounds, and particularly catalysts, according to the following formula: a complex of an actinide with ligand or ligands R1, where R1 may be one or more of: hydrogen, a halogen, a hydroxyl group, -R8, or -OR8, where R8 may be or incorporate an alkyl, alkoxido, aminoalkyl, amino, thiolato, aryl, aryloxido, cyclic, silazane, fluorocarbon, hybrido or hydroborato group, including halogen substituted forms thereof; and with ligand or ligands of structure (I) where R2, R3 and R4 may independently be -(CH2)-x (where x is between 1 and 5) or halogen substituted forms thereof; and where R5, R6 and R7 may independently be -SiMe3, -SiMe2R9, -SiMeR9R10 or SiR9R10R11 where Me is -CH3 and R9, R10 and R11 are independently selected from phenyl, phenol, -(CH2)yC(CH3)3, -(CH2)yCHCH3(CH2)zCH3, -(CH2)yCH3 (where y and z are independently 0 to 5) or phenolic, or halogen substituted forms thereof. The compounds are particularly suitable for catalysing polymerisation reactions.
