An apparatus for the optical analysis of biological tissue materials, has a light ray source (1,11) directed at the tissue material, and a photo-detection system (6) to analyse the light beams diffused back by the tissue material, and generate an electrical signal according to the registered diffusion parameters. The electrical signal is processed (8) for analysis to give the level (80) of the concentration of the substance to be analysed in the tissue medium. The substance to be studied is glucose in an extracellular fluid medium. The light source is a coherent laser beam with a wavelength of 700-900 nm. The light can also be delivered by an optic fibre cable directed at the biological tissue, across the photo-detection system. The signal processor has a statistical analysis function for the light diffusion speckle, and can count the number of passes by zeroing the delivered electrical signal. It can also analyse the competence and shape of the diffusion. It has a filter for the incoming electrical signals, and measures their amplitude. The unit has a read only memory (ROM) to give the level (80) of the substance concentration in the medium. The distance is measured (9-11) for the diffusion to the photo-detection.
