An identification composition includes an indicator material, such as a fluorescent material, a plurality of trace materials serving to identify the composition, and a solvent medium for the indicator material containing a volatile component. The invention further includes a method for detecting or preventing tampering by applying the composition to a surface, and subsequently detecting on the surface the indicator material and the trace materials to indicate the source of the composition.
