<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for discriminating the kind of medium of a magnetic tape device capable of discriminating the kind of medium at the time of tape thread control. SOLUTION: In the method for discriminating the kind of medium, by which the medium of the magnetic tape device provided with a file reel motor to generate a tachopulse with its rotation is discriminated as one having the normal length or double length, the total tachopulses generated by the file reel motor during the time from the begining to the end of the tape thread of the magnetic tape cartridge which is loaded in the magnetic tape device, is counted, and when the number of total tachopulses is within the 1st range, the discrimination is made as the medium having the normal length, and the medium is discriminated as one having the double length when the total number of tachopulses is within the 2nd range which is smaller than the 1st range.</p> |
