ELECTROSTATIC DISCHARGE PROTECTION FOR DIGITAL MEDIA

Hand held digital media devices may be plugged into a host to permit the host to store data in it or to retrieve data from it. The form factors of the digital media devices are compact for minimizing the volume of space occupied in portable devices and for easy insertion, removal, and storage. A digital media device (200) includes a ground plane which is partially exposed to form a conductive ring (240) in the periphery of the major surface in which an electrical contact pad array is disposed, and further includes another ground plane which is also partially exposed to form a second conductive ring in the periphery of the other major surface, to protect the device from damage due to electrostatic discharge.
