A bottom electrode for an arc furnace operated with direct current consists of two parts made of different materials that may be joined to each other. A body (30) made of a refractory material is arranged in the free space (F) formed by face (23), inner surface (16) and the wall of the hole (15). The body (30) has a shape that brakes the movement of the molten mass (S) that flows around it during operation of the furnace.
