The automatic braking method involve detecting the relative velocity (vR) of an obstacle in the path of the vehicle and the distance (A) between the vehicle and the obstacle. The detected distance is compared with a braking distance of the vehicle at the detected relative velocity. An automatic braking is initiated dependent on the result of the comparison. The safe braking distance for the vehicle may be adjusted in dependence on the detected road and weather conditions.
