1307400 Opaque paper-like films FREEPORT SULPHUR CO 14 Oct 1970 [30 Oct 1969] 48916/70 Addition to 1307399 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Oriented opaque films suitable as a replacement for paper are formed from a composition containing a thermoplastic polymer and an inorganic material which has been surface treated with an organic titanium compound as described in Specification 1,307,399. The films may be produced by pressing (Example 5) or by melt-extrusion, followed by drawing first to 1À5-5 mils. at a temperature which produces a translucent film and secondly to 0À5-1À5 mils. at a lower temperature, e.g. 20-100‹ C. The films may be oriented in either step and may be fibrillated in the second step. The polymer may be polypropylene (Examples 1-4) or polyethylene (Example 5). The inorganic material exemplified is clay. Coloured materials may be used in addition to produce coloured films (Example 4), e.g. iron oxide, zinc chromate, or lead chromate on a silica core. |
