The rotating drive unit (7) has driving and driven axles (5,6), although these functions can be reversed. It forms part of the drive to each wheel of a driven axle, whether or not this is steerable. An electric or hydro-mechanical motor (1) and reduction gear (2) drive through two reversible free wheels (4,3). Steering wheel position determines the status of the free wheel (4) to enable the motor (1) to supplement engine power to the road wheel with the greater radius of turn. A second reversible free wheel (3) can be used to prevent friction losses.
