A fabric (22) is fed through a coating unit (23) for depositing an acrylic coating optionally containing a resilient additive onto the fabric. The strip of fabric is then fed through a blower unit (24) for adjusting the fluidity of the coating during a step in which a material such as mineral particles or a metallising film is transferred from a tape (29) originally supporting said material and onto the coating by means of a heating press (28). Some or all of these steps (33) may be repeated at least one once. The strip is then fed through a press (38) for applying a protective plastic film also originally supported on a tape (39). The above method is useful for providing decorative patterns on fabrics and leathers, in particular to impart a golden, coppery or silvery appearance typical of traditional orthodox icons.
