Reactor, process and apparatus for the production of ammonium salts

A reactor for making ammonium salts comprises an open-ended tube with an inlet end section (R1) leading into an upstream converging section (122) joined by a uniform diameter section (121) to a downstream diverging section (123), section (R1) comprising an axial inlet (111) for a first fraction of ammonia reagent and a radial or tangential inlet (112) for acid reagent, while at least one further inlet (124) for ammonia is located close to converging section (122). Also claimed is the production of ammonium salts using a tubular reactor, into which 80-99% of the acid and ammonia reagents are introduced at one end and the rest of the ammonia further downstream, the salts being recovered from the gas leaving the reactor in a settling chamber, the basic vapour leaving the chamber being neutralised in a further stage wherein it is neutralised by contact with a further fraction of the acid. Further claims are directed to the reactor combined with the settling chamber and neutralising stage.
