An apparatus for determining the concentration of ozone in air using surface chemiluminescence includes a fan (13), a chemiluminescence element (8), a photo-multiplier (6), a light emitting diode (LED) (15), a temperature sensor (16), and an electronic controller (12). In the apparatus, an air stream generated by the fan is conveyed via an inlet pipe (7) and a light trap system (17) downstream of it through a nozzle-shaped channel structure (2) on a metal block (9). The temperature sensor (16) and the LED (15) are installed in the metal block, and a chemiluminescence platelet (8) is attached to the underside of the block (9) as a chemiluminescence element. A window (16) is provided in the photo-multiplier (6)opposite the chemiluminescence platelet (8).Also claimed is application of the apparatus by installation in a drop sonde.
