<p>1415698 Radiator caps SAF-GARD SYSTEMS Inc 27 Oct 1972 [29 Oct 1971] 49568/72 Heading B8T [Also in Division F2] A valve and closure device, e.g. a radiator cap, comprises a top cover 9, Fig. 1, having a seal 10 and engaging a spring 11 which exerts a closure force on main valve 12. The cover 9 is of one-piece construction and is integral with spring locating means 18. The valve 12 has a seal 13 and carries an auxiliary valve 14 which opens gravitationally but may instead be biased by a spring towards its closed position, Fig. 2 (not shown), or carry on the upper end of its stem a plastics float (63), Fig. 3 (not shown), which closes the auxiliary valve when liquid is present in the radiator neck 1. The spring 11 is retained at its ends by co-operation with ribs 19, 24. The facing surfaces of the cover 9 and valve 12 may have tubular portions (32, 39) projecting therefrom into telescoped co-operation with one another, the tubular portions having circumferential shoulders (33, 42) thereon which co-operate to prevent axial separation of the portions. The overflow 7 may be connected to the bottom of a vented reservoir (51) containing liquid, so that air forced out through the overflow due to expansion of the liquid in the radiator is replaced by liquid from the reservoir when the radiator cools. The cap may have a resilient locking member 59 having an end (61), Fig. 6 (not shown), located in a cut-out in the upper lip of the radiator neck 1 to prevent unnecessary removal of the cap, especially when the overflow is connected to a reservoir as described above. The cover, main valve and auxiliary valve may be made of plastics or metal, e.g. the cover may be of glass-filled polypropylene. Alternative sealing arrangements between the cover and radiator neck are illustrated in Figs. 2 and 7 (not shown).</p> |
