The device has a control circuit (ST) which feeds control signals to the control element (P) with a series circuit contg. a charge changing coil (L) and an electronic switch (S1) between plus and minus poles of a power supply. A second series circuit is connected in parallel with the first switch. A third electronic switch (S3) is connected in parallel with the first diode. A second diode connected in parallel with the first electronic switch carries current from the negative pole to the coil. The control circuit is part of a microprocessor-controlled engine controller.
