A hypodermic syringe, with a retracting needle, has a locking mechanism (11) and a seal (10), to give high security during injection without a premature action. A release mechanism (12) allows the needle (2) and needle carrier (40) to move into the hollow piston (121), and to hold it trapped to prevent contamination of the needle and carrier (40).
