PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically convert a document from a 1st hypertext format which supports a multilayer background to a 2nd hypertext format which does not support the multilayer background. SOLUTION: A target file which contains all the background elements of the document in the 2nd hypertext format is generated. A current page of the document is displayed by using a mechanism which reads the 1st hypertext format out. After non-background elements are removed or hidden, a screen dump of the displayed page is generated. Reference to a graphics file generated by the screen dump is embedded in a target file. By this reference, backgrounds of respective pages are displayed behind the non-background elements of the pages when the document is displayed by a mechanism which reads the 2nd hypertext format out according to the target file. |
