PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a distance between a light receiving element of an image read semiconductor chip and a read face of a read original by covering part of a cover whose one major side is pressed into contact with a light receiving element forming area of an image read semiconductor chip and whose other major side is pressed into contact with a read face of a read original that is not covered with a protection material. SOLUTION: An illuminated light from a light emitting semiconductor chip 4 is scattered by a translucent body 12, spread in the arrangement direction of the light emitting semiconductor chips 4 with a groove formed to one major side of a cover 7 and is emitted uniformly to a read face of a read original in a line through the cover 7. A light reflected in the read face is led to a light receiving element of an image reading semiconductor chip 3, which provides an output of a read image signal in response to the contrast of an image. A light receiving face of the light receiving element of the image read semiconductor chip 3 is selected to a position of one major side of the cover 7 and a read position at which a read face of the read original passes is set to a position of the other major side of the cover 7 so as to the both close to each other so as to eliminate the need for a light transmission plate or a SELFOC lens.
