PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which produces high output in short-wavelength recording of <=0.8μm in central recording wavelength required for a small-sized video tape of high image quality, etc., and with which the increase of noise during preservation is suppressed. SOLUTION: The magnetic coating film of the magnetic tape which is formed by providing the one surface of a base with the magnetic coating film and the other surface with a back coating layer and is used for applications to record information of <=0.8μm in central recording wavelength contains both of magnetic metallic powder and inorg. powder of Mohs hardness of >=5 and contains carbon black of primary particles or flocs having the diameter larger than the major axis diameter of the magnetic metallic powder. In addition, the total thickness of the base, the magnetic coating film and the back coating layer is <=14μm and the magnetic tape is wound around the circumference of a hub in the state of positioning of the back coating layer on the inner side. The tape winding of this hub is managed to <=5μm in the shrinkage of the peripheral surface.
