摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium which is excellent in traveling durability without the increase of the coefft. of friction and may be improved in electromagnetic conversion characteristics by improving the dispensability of particulate magnetic materials and the dispensability of particulate inorg. powder and decreasing low projections without changing the number of the relatively high projections of a magnetic layer surface. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is formed by providing the surface of a nonmagnetic base with the magnetic layer formed by dispersing ferromagnetic powder into a binder or by further providing a lower layers coating layer contg. inorg. powder and the binder between the magnetic layer and the nonmagnetic base. In such a case, at least one binder of the binder in the magnetic layer and the binder in a lower layer coating layer are polyurethane reins including a cyclic structure and ether groups. When the projection height of every 10nm on the surface of the magnetic layer is measured by an atomic force microscope (AFM), the number M10 of the projections of the height of >=10 to <20nm in a square sized 30×30μm is <=4000 pieces and the number M20 of the projections of the height of >=20 to <40nm is >=20 pieces and the ratio of M10 /M20 is 10 to 35.
