The telephone includes a reading and writing unit (24) which switches a telephone (10) from a normal operation function to a function which variates from the normal operation when a valid chip card (20) is inserted. The function of the operation in the non-normal operation function is set by data stored on the chip card. Preferably, the chip card telephone includes a facsimile band separation and a modem connection for the operation of a facsimile apparatus. The apparatus includes a modem connection dependent on the data stored on the chip card.
