The present invention pertains to a power supply system involving an electric motor (10) working either as a generator or a starter. Said motor operates for power generation involving an internal combustion engine (13) and, when in the breakaway thrust, takes the internal combustion engine (13) to the number of rpm required. The electric motor (10) is connected through a cycle converter (14) to a voltage transformer (15) which is connected to the battery of the on-board supply network (16). When starting the power supply system, the voltage transformer is bridged by means of a circuit component (20), so that the starter is powered directly by the battery (16). During power generation, the circuit component (20) is open, so that the generator (10) can operate with a voltage higher than that of the on-board supply network and the voltage is converted by the voltage transformer (15) into the on-board network voltage.
