A disk insertion and ejection mechanism for use in a mini disk drive (20) utilizing a disk cartridge having a top shell portion (41) and bottom shell portion (34) with the bottom shell portion being formed from sheet steel. The insertion and ejection mechanism operates by using cooperating cammed surfaces on a mini-cartridge (30) and a movable sled (45) within the mini disk drive. The cams operate to keep the mini-cartridge raised above the drive spindle (41) during cartridge insertion. When the mini-cartridge is fully inserted into the drive, the cams (58a, b, c, d) in the drive mate with cam openings (58a, b, c, d) on the disk and the cartridge can move down onto the spindle. Additionally, wedges in the drive (56b) and wedge cut-outs (57b) on the cartridge cooperate to lock a cartridge into the drive during insertion. During cartridge ejection, the cams within the drive cooperate with the cammed surfaces in the cartridge to raise the cartridge above the spindle whereupon the cartridge is forced from the disk drive. Wings (48) which are coupled to a platform (37) prevent the rotor from decoupling.
