The bucket for an excavating machine is of crescent shape in transverse section and designed for digging in clays. The bucket has a smooth inner base surface (3, 4, 6) which follows a continuous concave curve. the base shape causes clay entering the bucket to compress and slide continuously to the rear. Holes for bucket suspension axle pins may be provided in plates (7, 9) which are welded to the back of the bucket base. The bucket may include a maganese steel cutting plate (2), a reinforcing bar (4) and plain steel plate (6). The plates are welded together and polished and the bucket may have a rectangular or a trapezoidal cutting profile.
