The apparatus for adjusting valve timing comprises shoe housing 3, having radially inwardly projecting shoes 3a-c, is connected to timing gear 1. Rotor 9 has segment shaped vanes 9a-c in gaps between adjacent shoes forming sealed chambers 10, 15. Piston 7 is spring biassed into engagement with tapered hole 22a retaining shoe housing and rotor at the most retarded position. Pressure chambers 29, 30 communicate respectively with retard and advance-side chambers 10 15, the pressurized face of piston 7 in chamber 30 being larger than the face pressurised from chamber 29. The engine starts and oil is supplied, the rotor is held retarded by pressure in chamber 10 and pressure 29 rises to release piston 7. The pressure can be switched to the advance-side chamber and the retard side chamber vented, the size difference in piston faces ensuring that, if the advance-side pressure is low the piston is disengaged. |
