In optical path signal termination equipment which converts between an SDH signal transmitted at the electrical level and an optical path signal transmitte d at the optical level, an optical path supervisory signal is inserted in the optical pat h signal without increasing the signal length, by utilising the SDH section supervisory s ignal area contained in the SDH signal as the area for the optical path supervisory si gnal is the optical path signal.
