Production of pure alkyl alkylacetoacetate of formula CH3COCH((CH2)2R1)COOR2 (I) from a mixture of (I) and an alkyl alkenylacetoacetate (II) of formula CH3COCH(CH=CHR1)COOR2 or CH3COC(=CHCH2R1)COOR2 and optionally additional byproducts comprises reaction with an alkyl acetoacetate of formula CH3COCH2COOR2 (III) in the presence of a strong base and isolation of the intermediate formed between (II) and (III). R1 = 1-10C alkyl; R2 = 1-4C alkyl.
