The tool (5) joins superimposed upper and lower strap ends (12) through formation of a series of longitudinally displaced interlocking shoulders stamped into each of the strap ends. The punch (50) is defined by a planar bottom wall, a top wall, two end walls interconnecting the top and bottom walls, and two side walls interconnecting with the top, bottom and end walls. The connection between the top and side walls defines a pair of top edge surfaces. Each of the side walls has a number of opposed and like protuberances projecting from it and extending between the top and bottom walls. The protuberances form the interlocking shoulders in the strap segments. Each of the protuberances is formed by at least one short wall and at least one long wall. The short wall is disposed at an acute angle with respect to a longitudinal direction. The long wall is disposed generally parallel to the side wall. The long and short walls form a Z-shaped slit in the strap segments when the punch interacts with the die.
|
