The device comprises a cover plate (7) with a peripheral retaining collar (14) for holding the lobes (2) of the cup in position while the cup is being driven into the cotyloid cavity (1), and equipped with a fixing for an impaction tool. The cover plate is held in place and in connection with the base of the cup by a bush (9) with a threaded tip (15), and a plug (8) with a threaded tip (21) which screws into the bush. Once the cup is in position and expansion plate is applied to it to force the lobes outwards so that the spikes (5) on their outer surfaces engage with the walls of the cotyloid cavity.
