PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce pressure drop and to make uniform an exhaust gas flow passing through the inlet of a catalyst substrate. SOLUTION: A catalyst substrate 14 is provided which has an inlet end 18 and an outlet end 19 positioned in a housing 10 and is located in an exhaust gas flow downstream from an engine. The substrate 14 has a convex inlet end 18. The housing 10 has a frusto-conical inlet part. The inlet end 18 of the substrate 14 and the inlet part of the housing 10 are located sufficiently closely to each other so that an exhaust gas flow passing through the inlet end 18 of the substrate 14 is made uniform, and the substrate 14 is located in the housing 10.
