The novel feature in polyurethane prepn. by reacting polyisocyanates with H-contg. cpds. of mol.wt. 400-10,000 (and opt. also chain extenders of mol.wt. 32-399) opt. in presence of blowing agents etc. is that the activators used are carbonates of formula (I)-(IV). X = H or gp. I element; n = 1-12 (pref. 1, 2 or 3); p = 2, 3 or 4 (pref. 2); R<1> = H, 1-6C alkyl or N,N-dimethylaminoalkyl residue of formula -(CH2)mNMe2 with m = 1-6, pref. 1-3; R<2> and R<3> = 1-6C alkyl; R<4> = Me or Et; and R<5> = 1-4C alkyl or -(CH2)qNR<1>COOX, with q = 1-6, pref. 1-3.
