PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high carbon martensitic stainless steel having material characteristics including a hardness equal to or higher than that of the SUS440C steel and excellent in machinability, grindability, and cold workability. SOLUTION: This steel has a composition consisting of, by weight, 0.6-0.75% C, <=0.35% Si, 0.4-1.0% Mn, 12-15% Cr, 0.01-0.75% Mo, 0.01-0.3% V, 0.005-0.030% S, 0.0003-0.002% Ca, <=0.004% Ti, and the balance Fe with inevitably mixing impurity components. Further, the amount of coarse carbides not larger than 20μm at the maximum and exceeding 2μm is regulated to <=3%.
