Near the distal end of the hose-type catheter (2) are one or more balloons (3,15), each containing an electrical conductor (6,16-19) laid to a pattern and forming a coil. The coil axes can extend in different directions, typically at right-angles to each other, and each coil can be accommodated in a separate balloon. Electrical connections (20,21) from the conductor ends can lead to the proximal end of the catheter, and the conductor can be formed by depositing material on the balloon surface, e.g. by vaporisation. Where the balloon is made of plastics, the conductor can be contained inside the material.
