The invention relates to a method and device for online processing of forwarding mail. An image of the mail is picked up and the mail is transported in an intermediate storage unit. After digitization, areas with relevant information are determined and forwarding inscriptions, adressee name and address, sender address on return observations from deliverer are automatically read. The results are reviewed in a name and address data bank followed by a forwarding file if data does not comply. Mail which is not clearly read automatically and for which at least one forwarding instruction is provided as a possible point of delivery, is prioritized and evaluated according to forwarding and return inscriptions in a multistep video coding process. If initial video coding is incomplete, renewed automatic reading occurs involving coding results and, if required, an additional video coding. Mail leaving the intermediate storage unit is then distributed accordingly with the new printed address and forwarding instructions.
