Fire protection device for pipelines

The fire protection device has a housing with valve-like closure insertable in a pipeline. The closure device (14) is trough-shaped in longitudinal section with an outer trough (14a) which is filled with a fire retardant mass (18) which foams at raised temperature. A lid (14b) rests loose in the trough on the fire retardant mass so that at the temperature where the mass foams up which is above the temperature at which the closure is closed, the lid is released from the trough and is driven in the axial direction of the pipe line through the foaming mass. The closure device is held in the open position by a restraining device (16) such as a welded solder. When this is melted a spring release device (17) moves the valve closure from its open position into the closed position.
