A procedure for treating supple textile slings for use in a nuclear environment, especially in a nuclear reactor demineralised water pool, consists of washing the slings in water at 40 - 60 deg C without detergent for several minutes, followed by the same procedure with detergent. The slings, which are made from synthetic fibres e.g. polyethylene or 'Trevira' (RTM), are then given six successive rinses in water at 40 - 60 deg C for several minutes, followed by rinsing in cold water, and then steeping each sling separately in water at 40 - 60 deg C and stretching it for several minutes with a traction of some 1.5 times the maximum load experienced in use, with the steeping/stretching procedure repeated at least twice. The water from the final steeping and stretching operation is then compared with pure water for its optical density. The slings are considered suitable for use when the optical density variation does not exceed a set threshold.
