A novel drainage unit is used with hydrants, and comprises one or more detachable casing sections. In operation, these are surrounded by a mat assisting drainage. Preferably the casing sections have inter-engaging components, assisting connection to each other. The casings are plastic, preferably polyethylene, and each has a drainage mat made of polypropylene. Also claimed is a hydrant with such drainage device.
