The method involves several drives each having an adjustable drive speed. A chain running over all the drives is driven. The tension of the chain at least between two successive drives is measured. The drive speed of the individual drives is regulated depending on the measured chain tension. Preferably, depending on the measured tension between two successive drives, the drive speed of the first drive is increased and the speed of the second drive is decreased, or vice versa.
