The electric height adjustment has an electric drive motor for movement of the headrest (2) relative to an automobile seat having a releasable seat back which can be tipped forwards. The electric motor is operated automatically for retraction of the headrest from its working position, when the seat back is tipper forwards, for preventing the headrest hitting the vehicle roof. The headrest can be returned to its working position when the seat is moved back into its normal position.
