The mechanism comprises a catch plate (10) fixed to the floor and having opposite thrust and locking faces (101,102) and a hole (11) for a locking bolt with balls (32). The locking bolt is actuated by a control member in the form of a lever (42) with a handle and articulated joint which can be moved between locked and unlocked positions. The lever also has a safety catch which co-operates with the seat leg and prevents it from being tipped when in the locked position. The safety catch comprises a cam on the lever and a counter-cam on the locking mechanism housing.
