The method for guiding the edge (15) of the track (16) running in a first track longitudinal direction (17), includes the measurement of a first actual position of the edge, which is compared with a desired position (21), and from this a control signal is produced. With the help of which an edge movement unit (1-8) is operated, until the actual position falls nearly in the desired position. The track edge to be guided during the passage of the track is moved to and from oscillating about the desired position, by the edge movement unit. The oscillating movement of the track edge results in a frequency in the range of 5-20 Hz. Two track edges (15) running essentially parallel to each other, are guided at the same time by two separately controlled edge moving units (1-4,1'-4'), in the first track longitudinal direction and in a second direction (18) at right angles, and are moved oscillating about the desired position.
