A valve particularly for anaesthesia and patient ventilation comprises valve member (14) which is urged by spring (13) to close a valve seat (24), thereby controlling flow of gases between an inlet and an outlet (12). Annular control member (17) within the valve housing can be rotated by cap to displace member (17) axially, thereby positively lifting the valve member (14) off valve seat (24) when it is desired to open the valve. Formations (16) and (28) on valve seat (24) and on control element (17), respectively, define an annular gap for the passage of gases through the opened valve which progressively increases as the control element moves in the valve-opening direction. In the valve closed position control member (17) is not in contact with the valve member. Rotation of the cap (20) is translated into axial movement of control member (17) by a screw threaded connection (18, 19) between the housing and member (17) and a splined connection between the cap and the control element. |
