PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarization control element which is used for optical communication, optical switching, optical information processing, etc. SOLUTION: This polarization control element has a ridge type optical waveguide structure consisting of a 1st clad layer 51, a core layer 52 which has a larger refractive index than the 1st clad layer 51, and a 2nd clad layer 53 which has a smaller refractive index than the core layer 52 on a substrate 50. In this case, an area which has a grating structure 54 is formed on the surface of the said core layer 52, this area having the grating structure 54 is arranged in a right-left symmetrical state about the light guide direction, and the arrangement is repeated periodically (n×L) alternately to the right and left. |
