PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially easily obtain the subject compound useful as a photopolymerization initiator at a low cost by using an industrially inexpensively available p-haloisobutyrophenone as a raw material. SOLUTION: This method for producing (D) 2-methyl-1[4-(alkylthio)phenyl]-2- morpholino-1-propanone of formula III comprises reacting (A) a p- haloisobutryophenone of formula I (X is Cl atom, Br atom, F atom) with (B) an alkyl mercaptan (preferably methyl mercaptan) in the presence of a base (preferably sodium hydroxide), halogenating (C) the obtained p-(alkylthio) isobutyrophenone of formula II (R is a 1-4C alkyl), and subsequently reacting the halogenation product with morpholine. When the component C is produced from the component A, the reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of a phase transfer catalyst. |
