PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain stable SiCN gel as a precursor of ceramics by allowing specified silylcarbodiimide to react with specified silane. SOLUTION: Silylcarbodiimide represented by the formula R3 SiNCN-SiR3 (Where R is alkyl or aryl) is allowed to react with silane represented by the formula RSiX3 (where R is H, alkyl or aryl and X is F, Cl, Br or I) to obtain the objective SiCN gel as a precursor. In this reaction, a base may be used as a catalyst. Pyridine is added as the catalyst by 0.01-1.5 equiv. per 1mol of the silane. The reaction takes place even in the absence of an additive but may be allowed to proceed in an inert solvent such as THF, diethyl ether or toluene. The reaction time depends on various conditions but is usually about 10min to 15hr. The reaction temp. is in the range of room temp. to about 80 deg.C. The precursor is converted into nonoxide type silicon ceramics by thermal decomposition at about <1,450 deg.C in inert atmosphere. |
