NEW PEARLESCENT PIGMENT, AND COATING COMPOSITION, COSMETIC, INK AND PLASTIC CONTAINING THE SAME

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new pearlescent pigment which can exhibit quite a novel color resulting from the compound action of the color of mica and the interference color by coating a reduced titanium-containing blue synthetic mica with a metal oxide. SOLUTION: The synthetic mica is prepared from e.g. fluorophlogopite by a fusion synthetic method such as the crucible method or the aging fusion method which are performed at 1,300-1,600 deg.C. The titanium content of the starting material for its production depends upon the aimed density of blue color and may be in the range of 1-15wt.%. The synthesis is carried out in a reducing atmosphere formed by injecting a reducing gas or a reducing agent such as carbon into the melt of the starting material. After the material is molten, the melt is crystallized to obtain a blue synthetic mica. If necessary, other coloring elements such as iron and cobalt are added to the system. Since the synthetic mica needs to have a smooth surface, large crystals obtained by crystallizing the melt in an insalating vessel are pulverized. It is desirable that the obtained synthetic mica has a breadth and a length each of which is 3-100μm and a thickness of 0.05-1μm. The mica powder is coated with a metal oxide by firing by a known method.
